In Spain the number of NEETS (Youths who don’t study or work) is increasing. A study. carried out by the National Institute of statistics, demonstrated that “in the third trimester of 2016, there were a total of 1,420,800 young people who weren’t studying or working.”
As if the NEETs didn’t have enough problems, they now have to face comparison to the “Yes-Yes-Kids”, young people between 16 and 19 who work and study at the same time. Although the term has become fashionable, I hope it doesn’t stick because the label creates unfair distinctions and is a distraction from the real problems of the recession.
I spoke to four young Spaniards to find out if they thought that these labels were unfair or if they accurately represented their lives.
Diana, 25, “NEET”
Hi Diana, do you consider yourself a NEET?
Right now I could be considered a “NEET”, but I know some people, like my friend’s boyfriend, who don’t work or study because they don’t want to, for me people like him are NEETS.
People who don’t want to work?
Absolutely. In Madrid you can find work, a lot of times it’s not good work, but it exists. If you don’t look for it like that guy you deserve the label “NEET”.
Ok, so are you looking for work?
Yes. I was working before but on a short term contract and it was badly paid. Normally this kind of work lasts for one, month or two but rarely more.
¿Do companies offer short term contracts to mainly young people or everyone?
I worked for a fast food chain where there were people who had signed their contracts before the crisis and they had better conditions than the young people and foreigners that were working there.
What’s the worst salary you’ve been offered?
I’ve worked for €5 per hour but I know people who’ve worked for €4.
€4? I can understand why some “NiNis” might not want to work
Me too! That wage is an insult. It depends if you need to work or not. I know people who have worked for those wages, because they’ve got children.
Have you thought about going abroad to work?
I’ve worked in England and there they pay you better, for example overtime is paid extra there and here it isn’t. I’d live in England if it wasn’t for the weather and my family and friends.
Is there anything else that calls you back to Spain?
I don’t drink, so I prefer going out in Madrid where the life is in the street and everything is more relaxed, rather than getting drunk before 9pm in the pub.
Are there a lot of people from your generation who don’t drink because they are working and studying at the same time like the “SiSis/ Yes-Yes Kids”?
I’ve got two cousins who are in that situation and it’s true they don’t drink as much because they have less time to go out, not for another reason. I don’t drink simply because I’ve never liked it.
What do you think of “SiSis/ Yes-Yes Kids”?
It’s cool. I’m proud of my cousins but at the same time I don’t think it’s a very sustainable way of life. I think it’s more important to work to live rather the live to work. That’s why I’m going to continue to stay in Spain.

Where do you do and where do you study?
I’m an architect and in the afternoons I study English in the British Council.
Do you receive a good salary or is it difficult to make ends meet?
It’s ok, it could be better. I work as waitress at events such as weddings, to earn a little bit more money as well.
So we could say you’re a “Yes,Yes,Yes-Kid”…
You could say that…
but it sounds ridiculous. Do you have a permanent contract in your work?
No, I have a contract that’s based on the amount of work my studio has, when their projects end they can choose to renew my contract or not.
When do you think it will finish then?
It should have finished in October 2016.
Ok, are you worried?
Not really. I feel quite fortunate to be working there, as I’m enjoying myself and learning a lot. If I lose my job I know that my parents could help me with my rent or I might look for a job abroad.
What do you think about “NEETS”?
Perhaps I don’t understand their situation because I’ve never experienced it, but even though I can understand that it’s difficult to find work I can’t understand people who are doing nothing with their lives. In that situation you could study something else…a night class or learn to paint… or whatever.
Do you think the situation in the job mark is the worst it’s ever been?
It’s better now than it was three years ago, at least in architecture. However maybe I think that because all my close friends are working.

Daniel – 19, “NEET”
Hi Daniel, what do you think about “NEETS and Yes,Yes-Kids “sisis”?
Right now I’m a “NEET”, I’m not working and I’m not at uni. I am study for the B2 exam in French though and I’ve just started to study Japanese.
Where are you studying Japanese?
With my iPad. I decided not to study bachillerato and I studied the English equivalent in Wales the A-Levels. After that I went to France and I’ve been working there for the last seven months. I came back to Spain to see my family and friends and try to find a temporary job.
And it’s difficult for you, who speaks three languages (two fluently) to find work?
I worked as a waiter in two restaurants in England and I’ve got a year of experience as well. Here I’ve found it impossible to find anything. I’ve sent my CV to a lot of places, not only in Madrid, but In Barcelona as well and none have replied.
Have you got friends in the same situation?
All my friends are at university. I don’t know anybody who’s working here.
Was it the same in Wales?
It was the opposite. There you can choose between university and work-based training and, in my experience, it was much easier to find a job. When I was in school in Spain I remember a lot of teachers saying if you don’t study you’ll end up living under a bridge, that’s a little extreme right?
Yeah that’s a bit full on. Do you think the labels “NEET” and “Yes,Yes-Kids” are an extension of that attitude?
Yeah they could be. The problem here is there’s a lot of pressure to go to university and after get a “good” job, because of this all of my friends are at university and they probably won’t start working until they’re at least 27.
Is it good advice to go abroad to look for work?
I know a Spanish couple who studied business studies at one of Madrid’s best universities, but afterwards they couldn’t find a job in Spain. So they went to Wales and started working in restaurants there.
How do they feel about that?
They’re happy, well more or less, they say the weather and the food could be better, but they found a good house and working conditions really quickly. Their original plan was to stay for one year, but now they’re thinking of hanging around for a bit longer.
And what’s your plan?
I’m thinking about going to university in the UK to study modern languages, but I want to spend my third year in Tokyo when the Olympic Games are held there and work as some kind of ambassador or guide. I think it’s really important to know what you want to achieve with your studies. I know that I want to dedicate my life to learning languages, not just studying them, but living in different places to learn the culture. I don’t want to get caught in the trap of BA, MA, PHD no job that exists in Spain.

Inaxio – 23, “Yes,Yes-Kid”
Hi Inaxio, is it difficult studying and working at the same time?
I have a part-time timetable in my job and that gives me enough time to study for my Masters. Also I’m studying remotely and the course has been planned to be combined with work.
Is it difficult to make ends meet on a part-time salary?
The truth is I don’t have too much trouble paying my bills, what’s difficult is saving money. Luckily I don’t have to ask my parents for money often, and I must say that when I have they’ve always been really generous with me.
What’s the effect of working and studying on your social life?
Now I can’t make the same plans as I did before, but I suppose that’s what the world of grown-ups is like, right?
Maybe, I hope not. Do you think your generation drinks less than previous generations because so many people work and study at the same time?
The normal thing for people of my age to do is buy bottles of alcohol and share them before going to bars. Doing that makes the night much cheaper and because of that you drink more.
What do you think of the labels “NEETS” and “Yes,Yes-Kids?
I think years ago when the term “NEET” was coined it referred to people who didn’t work or study because they didn’t want to. However nowadays many people aren’t working or studying because of the economic situation, there simply aren’t jobs. I’ve never heard of the term “Yes,Yes-Kid” before but I like it, it makes sense in this context.
Do you think the situation in the labour market is improving?
Workers are losing a lot of rights that have taken decades to achieve and they might not be able to get them back. For example it’s really rare that any company in Spain pays overtime and there are places where the contracts are only for one or two hours…I think we’re going backwards in this sense and there are politicians who can be blamed for this.

Hoy en día, es imposible ver las noticias sin oír sobre la normalización del fascismo. Ya sea la América de Trump, el Reino Unido en tiempos del Brexit, o el Frente Nacional en Francia cada vez más popular. El mensaje es el mismo, los extranjeros no son bienvenidos, el cual sigue abriéndose camino entre las principales corrientes políticas de los países occidentales.
Entonces ¿se sienten los fascistas ultras parte de una sociedad contemporánea también? En España, el artículo 510 de la constitución previene que grupos se identifiquen como neo-fascistas debido al racismo y la xenofobia integral de esta ideología. Es por eso que grupos como Hogar Social en Madrid buscan desvincularse de esa etiqueta al intentar destacar acciones prácticas en vez de ideologías.
Aun así, es imposible ignorar el hecho de que la líder del grupo, Melisa Domínguez Ruiz (Meli), tenga una esvástica tatuada en su tobillo y que el grupo esté acusado del ataque a una mezquita, hecho que Meli justificó en los juzgados el año pasado diciendo que la mezquita “estaba financiada por grupos yihadistas”. Meli sostiene que son los grupos de extrema izquierda, junto con los medios de comunicación, quienes etiquetan a Hogar Social como fascista (en lugar de ser una etiqueta que hayan elegido ellos mismos), aunque algunos de sus comentarios suscriben dicha ideología: “una familia negra puede ser legalmente española, pero en realidad no lo es”.
Sin embargo ¿son solo los de ultra-derecha los que expresan estos puntos de vista? Otros comentarios que hizo Meli en la entrevista no difieren tanto de los que se escuchan en nuestro día a día como por ejemplo: “Hogar Social no necesita ayudar a una familia de Judíos porque me parece bastante difícil creer que los Judíos en 2017 se van a encontrar en una situación precaria.”
¿Entonces los miembros del grupo interactúan cómodamente con la sociedad contemporánea y globalizada? Ellos no van a Starbucks por café, pero, ¿comerían comida extranjera? ¿Van de vacaciones fuera? O se sienten tan perseguidos que no pueden participar en la vida normal. Entrevisté a Meli y a cuatro miembros más del grupo para averiguarlo.

En la primera entrevista, Meli estaba acompañada de María, quien contestó muy abiertamente a mis preguntas pero no quiso que sacásemos su foto en Vice. María, una chica normal de veinte años, bien vestida, habló con nosotros de manera cortés y amistosa”.
¿Qué piensas sobre la Unión Europea como solución a la gente que se encuentran en paro? A día de hoy (y antes del ‘Brexit’) cada uno de nosotros tiene derecho de vivir y trabajar en cualquier país en Europa, ¿Os parece bien?
Meli: Pues tienes la posibilidad de ir a buscar trabajo, otra cosa es encontrarlo. También me parece absurdo y totalmente contradictorio que haya médicos que formamos aquí en la educación pública y que luego se vayan a Dublín a trabajar. Es una vergüenza que el estado no pueda garantizar trabajo a su propia gente. Al final la UE es una marioneta de las oligarquías financieras que solo respeta el dinero, y no la cultura
María: Estamos a favor de la cultura europea pero de la UE no. No puede ser que España esté subyugada por los intereses de Alemania y Bélgica.
¿Qué piensas de los ingleses que quieren vivir en España si ellos comparten tu punto de vista político? Hace años Vice UK habló con gente que votó al partido de extrema derecha de Inglaterra, el ‘BNP’ que quería vivir en España porque ellos decían que se sentían “más cómodos de ser ingleses en Lanzarote que en Inglaterra” porque creían que Inglaterra era demasiado ‘multicultural’. ¿Tenéis problemas con esto?
Meli: Hombre, en términos legales lo pueden hacer, y en términos culturales no es lo mismo la inmigración entre países de Europa que la extra-Europea, pero yo creo que cada uno tiene que estar en su país y luchar por conseguir un objetivo mejor en su propio país. Los ingleses han demostrado con el ‘Brexit’ que todavía existe esperanza para la soberanía de cada nación.
Entonces, ¿estás de acuerdo con la Primera Ministra inglesa que ha dicho “Si crees que eres ciudadano del mundo, en realidad no eres ciudadano de ningún sitio.”?
Meli: Sí, me parece correcto.
¿Si Hogar Social está en contra de la inmigración y globalización, porque he visto algunas fotos en tu Twitter de españoles en otras ciudades como Edimburgo o Nueva York?
Meli: Están estudiando allí o de vacaciones.
¿Alguna vez habéis pensado vivir en otra ciudad de Europa?
Meli: ¿Otro país?, no.
María: De momento no me lo he planteado. No me cerraría puertas, pero siempre volvería porque España es mi patria y le tengo un cariño especial a este país. Si me fuera sería probablemente para formarme.
¿Qué otros países os apetecería visitar por vacaciones?
Meli: [risas] No tengo vacaciones.
¿Siempre estás trabajando?
Meli: Aparte de Hogar Social estoy estudiando antropología social y cultural a distancia en la UNED, entonces cuando tengo un hueco libre, tengo que leer algo de la carrera.
¿Qué hiciste en verano?
Meli: Fui a la playa con la familia por una semana, pues no una semana, cinco días. Hacía buen tiempo entonces fui a playa.
¿Aquí en España?
Sí.
¿Cuáles otros países os gustaría visitar su tuvierais más tiempo libre?
Meli: Un país que me llama la atención más que el resto es Grecia, porque creo que es nuestra madre y creo para entender el futuro también necesitamos entender de dónde venimos.
¿África?
Meli: Pues ella se fue este año a Tanzania de vacaciones.
Maria: Bueno de vacaciones no.
Meli: Bueno, fue como vacaciones de voluntaria.
Vaya, y ¿Qué tal?
María: Impresionante. Una de las mejores experiencias de mi vida.
¿Qué hiciste allí?
María: Un voluntariado para reconstruir viviendas para mejorar la calidad de vida de las personas.
¿No te importaba estar ayudando africanos, y asumo que eran gente negra, en lugar de españoles?
María: No, para nada. Aquí en España colaboro con Hogar Social para ayudar a las personas españolas pero en África ayudo al pueblo Tanzano porque creo que si en su país tuvieran una calidad de vida mejor no necesitarían emigrar.
María no me cuenta el nombre del ONG pero me imagino que es algo como África Feliz un ONG que sigue Hogar Social en Twitter.
Vale, ¿Qué otros países te gustan, María?
María: Tengo un especial cariño a Alemania, porque parte de mis antepasados son de allí y es verdad que he ido varias veces. Pero es una cosa sentimental no por otra razón.
¿Hay algún país que admiréis por su política?
Meli: ¿Por su política como país? Ninguno, creo a día de hoy ningún país está bien.
¿En el pasado?
Meli: [risas] Creo que Atenas cuando nace la democracia allí, pero eso es muy antiguo.
Tengo que preguntar sobre temas más modernos. ¿Qué pensáis de Alemania durante la época Nazi? ¿Tenían razón?
Meli: Creo que todas las construcciones históricas se tienen que ver en un contexto determinado en lo cual no podemos entrar porque estamos en el siglo XXI. Entonces es muy fácil analizar una época pasada bajo un prisma actual, pero no soy historiadora entonces a este tipo de preguntas no puedo aportar.
¿Y tú, María, crees que los Nazis estaban equivocados?
María: Estoy de acuerdo con ella. Tienes que meterte muy bien en el tema para aprender bien de los errores. Toda la gente de las etapas de la historia responde de unos problemas, lo que pasó en Alemania tuvo sus motivos.
¿Y los motivos eran lo bastante fuertes para montar campos de concentración?
Meli: ¿Sabes lo que pasa? Yo me considero una persona que cree en la libre expresión y sobre todo en la libertad de investigación, pero aquí en España no se puede opinar sobre esto porque es un delito.
Vale, ¿la época de Franco también, no?
Meli: Si es por criticarle, no, pero la legislación de 510 es bastante dura entonces no podemos hablar de esto.
María: Franco es parte de la historia de este país, es vergonzoso que solo se pueda opinar en contra, no somos historiadoras pero deberíamos tener el derecho a la información y a tener una opinión que no sea la políticamente correcta.
Una última pregunta para ti, María ¿Qué piensan tus padres y tus compañeros de la universidad sobre tu participación en Hogar Social? ¿ Piensan que es algo normal o extremo?
Pues todos saben que soy una persona que no toma decisiones sin pensar antes. Mis padres siempre me apoyan; y mis compañeros…pues algunos conocen que colaboro con Hogar social, y unos dicen que tengo razón y otros no, pero no me siento aislada.

Hola, ¿Aparte de Hogar Social a qué dedicas tu tiempo?
Estoy cursando primer año de bachillerato y cuando acabe me gustaría meterme en el ejército.
¿Qué son las creencias políticas y cómo te identificas ti mismo?
Soy identitario, entiendo mi política como una visión de acción total y de romanticismo puro y mis creencias me ayudan mucho día a día.
Estamos en contra de la globalización. Reconocemos que todas las culturas son diferentes, nosotros, gente de India, la cultura musulmana, cada uno tiene una forma de ver la vida y vivirla. Eso es lo que hace bonito el mundo, si fuera a India me gustaría ver una manera diferente de vivir, pero si mezclamos culturas perdemos nuestra propia cultura que hemos desarrollado a lo largo de los años.
¿Qué haces cuando te vas de vacaciones, te mezclas con otras culturas?
Suelo pasarlas aquí en Málaga o en Canarias, pero bueno ver el mundo siempre está bien, no me puedo quejar he visto bastantes países aquí en Europa y la forma de vida eses bastante similar.
¿Y qué te gusta hacer cuando estas de vacaciones?
Pues las cosas normales, beber una cerveza, jugar futbol o ver el partido.
¿Te gusta viajar y ver partidos?
Sí, soy muy aficionado al futbol.
Los equipos españoles han tenido más éxito que ningún otro país en la Liga de Champions y el fútbol mundial en general, ¿no es este un ejemplo de como la inmigración puede llevar a un país a ser uno de los mejores?
Ricardo: Hay una inmigración sana, que no impone ni una tradición a la fuerza.
Meli: Pues el fútbol moderno es una cuestión de dinero no es cuestión de excelencia. Equipos como el Madrid o Barcelona traen a muchos jugadores inmigrantes los cuales no elevan el fútbol español a un mejor nivel”y la prueba es que hemos sido campeones del mundo y Europa sin un inmigrante en nuestra selección, solo españoles.
¿Si los jugadores españoles tienen que jugar con y contra los mejores jugadores en la Liga cada fin de semana cuando viene la Eurocopa, la selección podría estar más preparada, no?
Ricardo: No lo sé, creo que para el Real Madrid y Barcelona esta es una cuestión de dinero y vender camisetas por todo el mundo.
¿Preferiríais que el Real Madrid ganase todo en los próximos cinco años con un equipo conformado por extranjeros o que quedasen en segundo lugar en todo con un equipo de solo jugadores españoles blancos?
Soy del Atleti, entonces prefiero que gane el Atleti [risas], pero sí prefiero que queden en segunda posición.
me parece algo muy bonito que un equipo con gente de aquí que no tiene al mejor jugador del mundo, pero un equipo que esta dándolo todo frente a otro que puede acoger a los grandes jugadores solo por dinero, esto/ me parece muy bonito – demuestra un gran valor.

Hola Ismael, cuéntame de ti.
Trabajo como cocinero en un pequeño bar. Estudié cocina año y medio y desde entonces digo que me dedico a eso, la cocina.
¿Eres buen cocinero?
Bueno, soy cocinero.
¿Te apetece viajar para conocer otros países?
Sí, claro que sí, para ver diferentes culturas, sobretodo aprender de ellas. Me gustaría a ir a la India y África también.
¿En África, quieres ir a un país específico?
Etiopía por ejemplo.
Sé que es muy famoso por el café esto tiene que interesar a un chef. ¿Pero, tu como una persona que colabora con Hogar Social, no te sentirías incómodo compartiendo ideas culinarias con etiopios?
No si ellos están en su propio país. Me gustaría conocer la comida y la historia de allí.
¿Hay otros países que quieres visitar por su comida?
Hay muchos, Francia, Italia, India…demasiados.
¿Cuál es el país que tiene la mejor comida del mundo?
Pues dicen que la mejor comida está en Francia, pero España también le pelea mucho.
Creo que los vinos españoles son impresionantes, pero creo que hay mucha comida aquí que está sobrevalorada, la tortilla de patatas por ejemplo.
¿No te gusta la tortilla de patatas?
[A ese punto todo el mundo me esta mirando sacudiendo sus cabezas – aparte cuando llegué a la casa ocupa, dos tipos con cabezas rapadas cerraron la puerta detrás de mi]
Meli: [Con risas] ¡Anda, los ingleses tienen una comida excelente!
Tienes razón la comida inglesa no es muy buena. Por eso estoy a favor de la inmigración. Inglaterra necesitó inmigrantes para mejorar su comida.
Denis [que está sentado al lado de Ismael]: Tú como inglés, ¿te gustaría que te impusieran comer tortilla de patatas siempre a través de la publicidad? ¿Te gustaría que fuéramos a tu país con toda nuestra comida y te bombardeáramos subliminalmente con mensajes que tienes que comer esto, en plan, abrir tiendas de comida rápida española por todos lados?
Si fuera tortilla de patatas no me molestaría porque creo que no va a tener mucho éxito en otros países. ¿Pero tú sientes que las grandes empresas como McDonald’s o Coca Cola están destruyendo tu propia cultura?
Denis: Sí, sentimos eso ¿Te gusta la comida de tu país?
No tanto, prefiero otras comidas como la italiana, la francesa o la india.
Ismael: Ah, la India también me gusta.
¡Qué sí!
Meli: Hombre, dicen que la comida mediterránea es la mejor.
Ismael: La más sana.
¿Más que la japonesa? Ellos también comen mucho pescado y menos fritos.
Ismael: También es una cocina muy buena. Por otro lado, la comida china no tiene buena calidad.
Meli: Esto es uno de las consecuencias de la globalización. No tiene nada que ver la comida china allí con la comida china de aquí.
¿Fuiste a China?
Yo he estado en China de vacaciones hace años y la comida que ellos comen allí no tiene absolutamente nada que ver con los restaurantes chinos de aquí.
Hay razones por la cuales la comida es diferente en cada parte del mundo.
¿Por ejemplo?
Meli: Los Asiáticos no pueden consumir leche. El consumo de lácteos esta muy relacionado con los casos de cáncer en Asia. Lo que pasa es fruto de la industria no algo propiamente cultural o natural. Creo todo en su justa media está bien pero lo que pasa con la gastronomía, tanto como los otros aspectos de la cultura, es cuando se mezclan perdimos la esencia.

Me gusta mucho viajar y por eso mismo me gustaría ir a China y encontrarme comida china, me gustaría ir a África y encontrarme comida africana, pero también me gusta que en España se pueda comer comida española. Lo que no quiero es que al final, vaya al punto que todo el mundo está comiendo hamburguesas y bebiendo coca-colas.
Estoy de acuerdo , pero tampoco quiero quedarme en un punto en el tiempo cuando la única opción es ‘fish n’ chips’, me encanta vivir en un mundo donde puedo pedir un curry a mi casa cuando tengo resaca.
Meli: [risas] Claro, porque eres inglés.
Pues al final Ismael ¿Has discutido con tus padres o tus compañeros por colaborar con Hogar Social?
¿Problemas?, alguno que otro pero no, poca cosa.
¿Y con otras personas?
Cuando estamos haciendo los repartos de comida, gente de la extrema izquierda viene con botellas, piedras, palo lo que sea para atacarte.
¿Te ha pasado algo malo?
Todavía no.

Denis ¿Qué haces cuando no estas aquí en Hogar Social?
Yo he estudiado derecho, acabé la carrera e hice dos Másteres, uno en fiscal y el otro para el acceso a la abogacía, y ahora estoy trabajando como becario y no recibo ningún tipo de sueldo.
¿Has pensado en ir a otro país para trabajar?
Pasé una estancia en Londres para aprender inglés y vivía en ‘Leyton’, y esas zonas en las afueras de Londres, creo que esas zonas eran ‘ghettos’, barrios bastante inseguros, en estos sitios no me sentía seguro entonces, creo que el intercambio cultural que pudiese haber ahí, no sería bonito.
¿Por qué te sentías inseguro, por los inmigrantes o los ingleses blancos que vivían allí? ¿Algo malo pasó?
Pues no hablaba con mucha gente en ‘Leyton’ , solo me miraban mal por la calle. Yo no vi a un blanco y una negra allí juntos y los pocas veces que vi parejas interraciales fue en el centro de Londres.
¿Y te sentiste incómodo con esto?
No me siento incómodo, pero creo que es una prueba que el multiculturalismo falla o solo funciona para los ricos.
Pero tú también estabas viviendo como un inmigrante para aprender inglés. Estoy confundido, ¿Estás en contra o a favor de la inmigración?
No se puede estar en contra de la inmigración totalmente porque es evidente que la inmigración trae buenas cosas o personas también. Este tipo de inmigración, podemos decir es de primera clase, que pueden traer gente letrada, o inventores.
Como en ‘Silicon Valley’ en los Estados Unidos, allí los extranjeros son los responsables de la innovación, sobre todo gente del este de Asia. ¿No te parece extraño que Hogar Social utilice bastante la plataforma ‘Periscope’ , que es de una compañía que fue fundada por un inmigrante iraní de segunda generación?
Puede ser que haya algunos buenos elementos, como este tío iraní que contribuye a un país, pero los que llegan aquí no son los buenos.”

Es complicado, pero por lo general, en esta situación con el paro, no podemos aceptar a tanta gente. Yo no veo un inmigrante como un enemigo, no me considero racista, pero creo que tenemos que ayudar a la gente primero en las zonas donde viven antes de que emigren.
¿Y como turista es diferente, no? ¿Dónde sueles ir de vacaciones, aquí en Europa o fuera?
Denis: Sí, es muy diferente visitar un país que vivir allí para siempre. Sobre el tema de vacaciones, por lo general voy al sur de España y hago ‘kitesurf’ en la playa, pero también me encantaría visitar América Latina.
¿Algunos países en particular?
Chile, porque tiene tanto desierto como glaciares y tiene mucha variedad en tema geológico. A mí, me gustan las piedras.
Ok, esto no parece muy emocionante pero me alegro que quieras visitar Chile por eso en lugar de homenajear al General Pinochet. ¿Hay un país que quieres visitar por su interés en política de extrema derecha? ¿Tu gustaría viajar al pueblo donde Hitler nació?
Meli: Como lo he dicho antes no podemos hablar de este tema.
¿Entonces Denis no puedo preguntarte qué piensas sobre los Nazis o el General Franco?
Denis: Franco, a mí no me gusta. No me gusta nada.
¿Por qué?
No nos gusta porque no es ideológicamente no va con nosotros era una persona que al fin y al cabo un dictador autoritario y ultra católico, primero religión y luego los demás. Nosotros queremos el estado primero.
Meli: En principio era mucha gente que supone lo que paso en España era una revolución nacional sindicalista, es decir del pueblo español de la clase obrera y al final lo fue, al final era un régimen nacional católico.
Vale, Meli sabes mucho de historia aunque antes dijiste que no eras historiadora.
Denis, ¿Tus amigos y compañeros saben que colaboras con un grupo llamado en honor a Ramiro Ledesma, un hombre que admiraba a Adolf Hitler, tanto por sus ideas como por su estilo de pelo?
Muchos amigos curiosean y yo los invito a venir y les ha gustado. Han venido muchos. La verdad es que cuando he tenido un problema con alguien siempre ha sido con respeto y hemos tenido una discusión sana. No impongo mis ideas a nadie.
¿Entonces tú te sientes aceptado por tus compañeros?
Cada vez más porque la gente se está empezando a dar cuenta de que pasa algo y algo diferente en este sistema de capitalismo global.
Robin Hood, a new social restaurant, opened its doors this month in the Spanish capital Madrid. Named after the legendary English figure who robbed from the rich to give to the poor the restaurant, the restaurant pays tribute to this idea by using the revenue from breakfast and lunch to serve the homeless in the evenings.
The Rev. Ángel García Rodríguez, founder of the charity Mensajeros de la Paz / Messengers of the Peace, which runs the restaurant stated: “The fundamental idea behind this restaurant is to restore dignity to eating. That way homeless or socially vulnerable people can eat sitting down at a proper table, with a table cloth, cutlery, waited on by staff and, on occasions, eat food prepared by the greatest chefs in Spain.”
Before the restaurant the charity largely served sandwiches from the Igelsia de San Anton / Church of Saint Anthony, a 24 hour church that is run in a somewhat similar way to a community centre. The church was a shared space, with the homeless eating alongside the worshippers on the church pews, or outside in the street.
The opening night of the restaurant was dramatically different. Some of Spain’s most famous chefs, such as Pepe Rodriguez (presenter of Spanish Masterchef) had been invited to cook there as if he was in his own restaurant. The dishes served to the press were similar to those you’d expect in a five-star hotel.
While the chefs and the few Spanish celebrities who attended the event were toasting each other, and posing for photos, I sat down with the homeless. They weren’t served alcohol and therefore we made do by raising shot glasses of gazpacho instead. Over the course of the dinner I asked some questions about the best places they’d ever eaten throughout the course of their lives, and was surprised to find a guy who could chat at length about the difference between European and American fast food.
JAVIER
David: What’s your favorite type of food?
Javier: Well when you’re hungry anything’s good, but if you’re asking what my favorite dish is, it’s paella.
Where’s the best place in Madrid to eat paella?
There used to be a place called el Valenciano / the Valencian near the town hall, but I think it’s closed down now. I’ve been to all types of restaurants; Chinese, Japanese, Thai and I like all of them. I like to try all different types of food in all types of places.
So what’s the best foreign food you’ve ever tried?
A long time ago I lived in the United States, so without a doubt, I can say the best foreign food is a slice of pizza in New York City. I’ve been to Rome as well and even the pizza that I had there was not as good as in New York.
Really? Why is it so much better?
I don’t know. Coca-Cola tastes better in New York as well. It’s not the same here.
It really tastes better on the other side of the pond?
I think so too, as well the big American chains Macdonald’s, Burger King, WhiteCastle taste better there too.
What’s the best fast food in the United States?
Well when I was living there it was WhiteCastle. It was the first one I tried and because of this I’ve always liked it best. It depends if you like hamburgers. Me, I like hamburgers so much that sometimes I hate them.
Because when you like something so much you can’t stop eating it?
Exactly! If you like something so much the answer is to drop it for two or three months because sometimes it can taste too good.
Can Madrid learn anything from the restaurants in New York?
I don’t think Madrid has anything to learn from the New Yorkers. We’re different to them and Madrid is a city with less pressure. Any night you can leave your apartment and go for a walk and stumble across many great places with good food and music.
Do you like to listen to music in bars and restaurants or does it annoy you?
I like to listen to good music, rock n’ roll, jazz, funk, soul, flamenco. I remember when I was living in New York and I heard the song ‘I’ve got you under my skin’ by Diana Krall, and I began to cry.
Can I ask a personal question? What is the most difficult thing about finding something to eat in your situation?
In Madrid it’s not really difficult finding something to eat. There are various good places where you can eat for free. You’re never really hungry in Madrid. Finding clothes isn’t a problem either, you can pick up good quality stuff from one of the clothing banks. The real problem is finding a job.

Charles: You’ve got an accent, where are you from?
DAVID: I was born in England, we’re not very famous for our food there. Have you ever tried English food?
Like ‘the fish and chips’ (laughs). I know that in English you don’t have an expression for ‘good appetite’.
It’s true, fancy restaurants say ‘bon appetit’ and Americans say ‘enjoy your meal’, but it’s not quite the same thing. In England ‘enjoy your meal’ means drink a lot. What’s your favorite meal, liquid or otherwise?
Rice, white rice, but a type of white rice that you can’t find in Spain.
What did you eat tonight?
Meatballs and paella.
Was it good?
I didn’t eat much of the paella. I don’t like how they prepare it here.
Hang on, you just told me that your favorite meal was rice?
Yeah, but I like white rice with a hot sauce, with fish or meat. I’m not a big fan of paella.
You like hot sauce?
Yeah, I’ve got my own and I always bring it with me in case the food isn’t spicy enough where I’m eating.

In your opinion what’s the best food in the world?
In my opinion any food is good as long as the person likes it and it’s been well prepared.
Is there any type of food you don’t like?
Well I eat very little meat because I’m a vegetarian. I like vegetables. However if someone has prepared a meal with meat, I’ll eat so as not to be ungrateful but I don’t like it. I’d prefer not to eat meat.
What’s the best food you’ve ever tried?
Well I spent a few years in Cuba and the Cubans aren’t accustomed to eating well, even though they have a lot of good products. I lived for a few years in Campeche (México). I liked the spicy food there, in particular the spicy broth with clams.
ANTONIO
What’s this place like in comparison to the church where you ate before?
Much better. There everyone eats sitting on benches or in the street. Here you get a table. It’s good.
How’s the food?
It was good. Some of the tapas were better than others.
A lot of people say that food prepared by their mother or grandmother is better, or more memorable, than food prepared by great chefs like those here this evening. What’s your opinion?
Yeah food prepared by your mother of course. The great chefs make lots of ridiculous fancy food. I spoke to one of them this evening and he told me the tapas were for show. They look good, but they don’t fill you up.
You’re not a fan of this type of food?
I like Spanish food. I’ve tried three types of food Italian, French and Chinese and I’ve always preferred the food from my own country. Oh and Japanese food like Sushi, that doesn’t attract me either.
Sushi is still quite fashionable in Madrid, but I’m not a big fan either, it can be a little bland.
Yeah, that’s it bland. I’d prefer a hamburger, lentils, jamón ibérico or cocido madrileño (a chickpea and chorizo stew).

María Elena: Well it’s impossible to say, there’s a lot of diversity here, different food from different regions.
Ok, but could you say where the best fish comes from for example?
José: From the North of course, but it comes to Madrid in refrigerated lorries so you can eat a great paella here.
Is paella Spain’s best dish?
María Elena: Well there are a lot of good things, but for me it’s the best. We’ve got great wines as well, great wines from all over the country.
José: And great cheeses too. Even though France has a better reputation Spain has a great variety.
Really? I always like to hear someone trash talk the French…
In that case…Spain has much better cheeses and wine than France, even though theirs are more famous. Ours are better and there’s a bigger variety.
